Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at Vitalia Rockside, I came to senior living after 14 years at The Ritz-Carlton Cleveland. The training and tools I gained in hospitality helped shape my approach to this work. Genuine care and comfort are always the top priorities.
Culinary in senior living gives that hospitality a deeper purpose. It is not only about service standards or presentation. It is about making residents feel valued, supported, and cared for each day.
Residents have also taught me to cherish time with my daughter while she is still little. Their stories and life experiences are reminders that time moves quickly. They encourage me to appreciate the moments happening right now.
One favorite special event is the Mardi Gras float parade. It brings energy, creativity, and celebration to the community. Events like this give the culinary team a chance to support experiences that feel joyful and memorable.
Success in this work takes genuine concern for residents’ well-being. That concern must show up in more than words. It has to be seen through action, consistency, and the way the team serves each day.
That may mean listening closely to resident feedback. It may mean noticing small details or responding quickly when something needs attention. Every thoughtful action helps create comfort and trust.
One reminder that this work makes a difference is resident satisfaction. When residents are happy with their dining experience, it shows the team’s care is being felt. That feedback matters because meals are part of daily life.
Another meaningful moment was passing the Joint Commission walkthrough. It was my first time going through that process, and it showed the importance of preparation and teamwork. It also reinforced how much culinary service contributes to the overall quality and care of the community.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
