Stay Warm and Cozy: Winter Preparation Tips from Vitalia Rockside’s Plant Operations Director

Category: Senior Living

Author: Mike Mackey, Plant Operations Director

As the Plant Operations Director at Vitalia Rockside. I know the importance of preparing the community and my home for the cold winter weather. To prepare your house for winter weather, start by inspecting and sealing any gaps or cracks in doors, windows, and walls to prevent drafts and conserve heat. Please be sure to clean your gutters and downspouts. This is to ensure proper drainage so that ice dams can damage your roof and walls when snow and ice accumulate.

Check your heating system and replace air filters. You might schedule a professional inspection to ensure it’s functioning efficiently and safely for the colder months. Insulate your home properly by adding weatherstripping to doors and windows. Add insulation to your attic and walls to retain heat and lower energy bills. Do not forget also to prepare your outdoor spaces – drain and store garden hoses, cover outdoor furniture, and trim tree branches that could damage your home during winter storms.

I do several activities to prepare for colder weather at work and home. Cleveland weather is unpredictable, so I always check the HVAC units, ensure plenty of salt for sidewalks to help prevent slips and falls, change vehicle oil, and check tire pressure. I always have a trusty snow shovel and ensure the snowblower works before the first snow. It is important to take winter weather seriously.

I also ensure plenty of flashlights, batteries, and an extra blanket in the car. Winter in Ohio is something I love, but you must respect it!

There is a feeling of accomplishment knowing I am prepared for freezing weather. Both residents and family can depend on me as the “go-to” guy, no matter the circumstance. It is gratifying, but also my responsibility.

A little time and money spent preparing for wintry weather will pay off great dividends through energy savings. There is no way to stop “Old Man Winter” from arriving at your door, but with some preparation, he will stay outside where he belongs!
