Creating a Welcoming Community

As Resident Services Director at Vitalia Rockside, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and even the surrounding neighborhood is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed gathering, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they truly belong.

From my perspective, every interaction offers a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the social and emotional benefits that come with genuine human connection.

Encouraging Resident Engagement

To me, community in a senior living setting means creating a place where every resident feels seen, valued, and connected. It is the simple, true feeling of belonging.

Building connections is especially important because many residents are starting a new chapter. New friendships ease nerves, replacing uncertainty with comfort, loneliness with companionship, and unfamiliar settings with warm, friendly faces.

I work to make connection effortless. I help residents find “their people,” those who share similar music interests, enjoy the same games, or love similar hobbies. Sometimes it’s as simple as inviting two residents to attend an event together. Other times, pairing a new resident with someone who has lived here longer helps them feel at ease right away.

Strengthening Connections Beyond Our Walls

I also strengthen our community’s relationship with the surrounding town by building meaningful partnerships. For example, we welcome local schools for intergenerational activities, collaborate with nearby churches for services and volunteer visits, and partner with community centers for events and outreach. These connections enrich residents’ lives and keep them involved in the world around them.

I love planning events that bring all our community relationships together: families, therapy partners, churches, friends, and local groups. These gatherings create a warm, personal atmosphere that makes every event more meaningful and enjoyable for our residents.

To help new residents feel welcome, I make it a priority to check in with them often. Whether I’m saying hello in the hallway or asking how they’re settling in, these small moments matter. Ensuring residents feel welcomed, safe, and comfortable is at the heart of everything I do.
