Men’s Health Month was created in 1992 to raise awareness of the importance of proper screenings, early detection, and obtaining regular medical advice for men and to encourage young men to implement self-care and a healthy lifestyle. Studies show a significant difference between the health of men and the health of women, as men are less likely to seek treatment for preventable diseases. 

I feel there are barriers to men seeking treatment. They still have that macho man complex. Men probably feel like they are weak if they decide to have preventative healthcare. I know some men feel that if they go to a female healthcare provider that they may think funny about them or if they go to a male provider, they will only tell them certain things. I also know that some men would rather see a healthcare provider that is the same culture and background.

There are simple changes that can be made to create a healthy lifestyle for men’s health. Create more men’s healthcare facilities so they can have the same comfort as women do for personal healthcare issues. Make sure these facilities are backed by local famous men, so other men will feel more comfortable about going. Talk about men’s health more in television shows, on local news, and with advertisements. Sponsor a National Men’s Health Day, so they can schedule all their appointments for the year.

Men can help improve their overall health and decrease their risk for serious diseases and illnesses by practicing a safe routine, starting from a young age and continuing that practice through adulthood.
